Walking Cane Handle
Shaping the handle of the walking cane was fun. I penciled a rough outline onto the sides and began removing wood.
Several tools used in shaping the handle: saw, 3/4″ chisel, spokeshave, rasp and file.
Where the fingers grab the handle I used a saw and chisel to remove the bulk of the wood. No photographs of this process, but here is a link to previous post (saw vise curves). For those of you who like using a coping saw that would work just as well.
The remainder of the shaping was a process of removing wood until the shape began to appear and smoothing until it is comfortable in my hand.
I had to be cautious around the mortise to ensure a tight fit when the handle is attached. The shape will be refined more when The handle and cane are attached.
Looking really good Rich. You are making me want to make one as well. I have shaped a couple of walking staffs this year along the same lines without joinery but really fun and useful. My mother wants a cane though…..
I think it would make a wonderful gift
This is a sweet little project. Please excuse my ignorance, but is this more for someone that’s disabled or a walking staff for hiking? Maybe it just doesn’t matter but I’m curious of the intent of this cane.
Thanks,
Shawn
This cane is intended for someone that is having trouble getting around and needs a little extra support. I suppose it would work for other things also. Paul Sellers has a staff that would probably work on trails for hiking. The handle is attached through the side with a Mortise and Tenon 18″ or so from the the top. It’s possible you can see it on his web site.
